About the program

Our junior Taekwondo program follows all the traditions of an authentic internationally recognised syllabus. With our master instructors Kukkiwon certified. This means a Black Belt earned at Joondalup Martial Arts will be recognised in any World Taekwondo (WT) school around the world. It also ensures a high standard and pedigree of black belt. We are not the largest Taekwondo school in Australia but we do have a reputation of being the best.

Our taekwondo program integrates all the traditional aspects of Taekwondo with child development and community spirit all leading to the ultimate black belt experience. As with the Little Tigers program the juniors must work towards achieving all their tags before they can grade with each tag representing a different skill set.

Most martial arts are well known for building good values in young people and at JMA, our kids are asked to demonstrate this. As well as their tags students must complete leadership tasks at each grading to show the instructor they have understood the focus of that particular level to achieve their next belt.

All of our programs are reality based to allow our members to practice and develop skills that may be required outside of the dojang.

The program is designed to teach kids that a true martial artist doesn’t just focus on oneself but is mindful of everyone and everything around them.

The Six Things Children Gain From Martial Arts

Building strength

At JMA we create our programs to help our members develop strong bodies, fine tuned motor skills and physical coordination. We will develop your child’s cardiovascular system, their muscular strength, and will create a general kind of body awareness which can only be gained from a whole body method of martial arts training. Training with JMA your child will be more coordinated, less susceptible to injuries, and be much more aware of their body and how to use it correctly.

Self Motivation

Children grow by learning to do things for themselves and at JMA we love to see our students putting their drink bottle on the shelf, remembering to take it home, learning to tie their own belt and helping other students. Our aim is to teach students to be self-motivated, practice makes progress and rewards come with focussed effort. These are all the small steps to a much larger picture; Independence helps grow confidence and strength of character.

Happy mindset

Effective communication is an important key to living happy lives. At JMA we pride ourselves on demonstrating positive communication, manners and thoughtfulness. We encourage our students to explore their emotions and help them to verbalise how they are feeling. Anger and frustration can often be a mask for fear and anxiety. Helping a student identify if they are feeling anxious, confused or even fearful about a particular situation can be a hugely effective way of empowering kids to deal with their emotions.

Better Performance at School

Research shows that students regularly training in martial arts perform better at school are more likely to raise their hand in class if they do not understand and are more engaged in class room activities! Having strong mentors in a positive training environment can also have a huge impact on your child’s ability to adjust to the social pressures of life. Not to mention the influence a good role model has on steering students away from negative influences.

Community Spirit

The ethos of Taekwondo is being part of something bigger than the individual. A black belt is not just about the skills and behaviours you learn in the dojang. It is how you apply them in all aspects of your life. It is with this in mind that we encourage our students to demonstrate community mindedness at each belt level. From small gestures such as random acts of kindness from our Little Tigers to large scale community projects from our junior and senior Black Belts. Acts of kindness, environmental education and leadership programs are all part of a JMA Students development and grading syllabus.

Confidence Soars

Nothing can take the place of the security in knowing that your child can defend themselves should the need ever arise…and your own child’s self confidence in knowing this themselves is immense. “People who continue to practice martial arts for prolonged periods are different from the general populace in these ways: they have a lower level of anxiety; an increased sense of responsibility; they are less likely to be radical; they have an increased level of self-esteem; and they are more socially intelligent.” (Source – Psychology Today, May 1985.)

Parents Want the Best for Their Child

Why? Because the world has changed a lot since you were growing up!

Every parent wants what is best for their children… it is only natural. But as they start to grow up and begin to express themselves, you realise… it may not turn out the way you were expecting!

From the moment they start to say “No”, you know you are in for a bumpy ride.

You just want your kids to be well adjusted and to be happy. As you send them off to school… your fears increase, will they be bullied or be the bully. So much seems to be out of your control.

Parents are often stuck in the middle of the “Damned if I do, damned if I don’t” scenario. Sometimes it takes someone outside of the family dynamic to reinforce what you are doing.

Martial Arts are not just about fighting!

Children learn respect for adults and each other, confidence, stranger danger as well as increasing their physical fitness. They are a part of a community and given responsibilities which nurtures them into responsible, respectful teens and adults.

At Joondalup Martial Arts, like you, we only want what is best for your child. All parents want their children to have the necessary skills to get them through life.

Most importantly for those moments we are not around.

Parents worry if their child will focus in school and be able to carry themselves with confidence, taking on life’s challenges head on.

Parents feel frustrated because their child:

Lacks Focus or ability to follow instructions well.

Is shy, has low Self Esteem and clings to their parents, particularly when trying new things.

Hates team sports and would rather not play sport at all.

Has been the victim of Bullying and has lost complete Self Confidence & Self Esteem.

Before starting Martial Arts, most parents felt that their child;

  • Found it difficult to focus on tasks and finish them
  • Were not able to stay focused for extended periods of time.
  • Were coming home from school upset due to some form of bullying.
  • This made the parent feel helpless and unsure on how to handle the situation.
  • Their Child’s Self Esteem and Confidence was quite low.

This was a real concern for parents particularly when the child was at school.

Parents are amazed that after a few weeks in Martial Arts their child is;

  • More Confident at school.
  • Stays Focused in class and home.
  • Has Improved Coordination
  • Has learnt some Bully Prevention strategies just in case the need arises.

We have created this amazing offer so that every child has the opportunity to try Martial Arts with “no strings attached”.
